Biography

Sergine Andre (alias ‘Djinn’), born in the Artibonite region of Haiti, is a Haitian-Belgian artist, who has lived and worked in Brussels since 2010.

Sergine Andre was born in the Artibonite Valley, in a still fertile region of an eroded land.
In that region, as everywhere in Haiti, human beings are less populous than spirits, especially during the frightful night.
Sergine Andre walks at night. She goes where others fear the worst. She sees what puts them in terror of their lives, and she shows us what it is.
Audacious Sergine! Each of her paintings makes a disquieting presence felt, makes the invisible visible.
It is as though the spirits, those on the other side, breathe upon the other side of the canvas. Their breath goes through it. The canvas reveals, touched by strange beauty, the strangeness of all beauty.
The non-figurative figure of an ungraspable being appears in pictorial space.
For those who know how to see, there is more to love than to fear.

text by Michael Norton, Associated Press, October 2004

At the end of the 94s, dazzled by the beauty of the post - impressionist works of the Barnes collection exhibited in Toronto, Djinn had the revelation of her vocation as a painter.
After three months of intensive classes at the Ottawa School of the Arts, she returned to Haiti where, encouraged by Tiga, she signed her first paintings.
In 1995, she befriended Pascale Monnin and set off with her on sloping paths populated by shadows and impure dreams. Disguised as a guede, she penetrates ever more "deep" inside her private garden. By the flickering light of a single small bòbèch lamp, she searches the belly of colors in search of her protective loa, crosses paths with all kinds of "criminals" who covet her ...

In May 1997, Djinn's first exhibition at the Galerie Monnin.
